EDC Mission Statement

Town HallThe Economic Development Committee was established as a permanent standing committee at Town Meeting on April 27, 2017.  From 2012 to April 2017, the EDC had been established as an Ad Hoc Committee to the Board of Selectmen. The EDC is permanently established to expand and strengthen the local economy, promote job creation and enhance the Town’s quality of life through prosperous, balanced and sustainable economic development.

The role of the EDC is to investigate current economic conditions, assist the Town with the creation and execution of appropriate economic development initiatives and marketing opportunities, coordinate activities to enhance or expand economic development, and engage in related activities as necessary to further EDC’s mission and purpose. Since 2015, some key programs, events and materials have included; the Commercial Broker Breakfast Series, Boroughs+ Summit on Last Mile Connections, Shop SOBO, and Permitting Guide for Businesses.

Key to EDC efforts is to work closely with the Town’s leadership and residents to retain and attract businesses that will expand and strengthen our business tax base while preserving the character and charm of Southborough. This will help the Town reduce its reliance on residential taxes and enhance the Town’s quality of life.

The EDC is composed of several committee members and will include a member of the Board of Selectmen, Town Administrator, Town Planner, and individuals who represent a cross section of business owners and leaders that understand the unique requirements of implementing the economic development goals of our Town’s 2008 Master Plan and the findings learned from the Town’s recent Economic Development Self Assessment Tool conducted by Northeastern University, Dukakis Center for Urban and Regional Policy.

EDC Goal

To encourage the continued development of the Town’s industrial and commercial tax base by refining internal organizational structures, processes, and resources to effectively support economic development initiatives that will enable businesses to grow and prosper.
